Many legendary musicians once served in the United States military. Discover the stories behind some of music's most famous veterans.

Famous Musicians Who Served in the Military

Many people know these artists as legendary musicians, songwriters, and performers. What some fans may not realize is that a surprising number of music's biggest names once wore a military uniform.

Military service has shaped countless lives, and for many artists, those experiences influenced their music, discipline, and personal journeys. Here are just a few famous musicians who proudly served.

Elvis Presley – United States Army

Perhaps the most famous example is Elvis Presley, often referred to as "The King of Rock and Roll." In 1958, at the height of his career, Elvis was drafted into the United States Army. Rather than seek special treatment, Presley served as a regular soldier and was stationed in Germany.

His military service only increased public admiration for him and remains one of the most recognizable examples of a major celebrity answering the call to serve.

Willie Nelson – United States Air Force

Country music icon Willie Nelson enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school. Although a back injury ended his military career early, Nelson went on to become one of the most respected and influential songwriters in American history.

Today, his music continues to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.

Johnny Cash – United States Air Force

Before becoming "The Man in Black," Johnny Cash served in the United States Air Force during the early 1950s. Stationed in Germany, Cash worked as a radio intercept operator and is said to have purchased his first guitar while serving overseas.

His military experiences helped shape both his songwriting and his lifelong connection to veterans and working-class Americans.

Jimi Hendrix – United States Army

Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix enlisted in the Army in 1961 and served as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. Although his military career was relatively short, his time in service introduced him to fellow serviceman Billy Cox, who later became a longtime musical collaborator.

Hendrix would go on to redefine electric guitar and influence musicians around the world.

George Strait – United States Army

Before becoming the "King of Country," George Strait served in the United States Army. While stationed in Hawaii, Strait began performing with an Army-sponsored country band, an experience that helped launch what would become one of country music's most successful careers.

Kris Kristofferson – United States Army

A Rhodes Scholar, helicopter pilot, and gifted songwriter, Kris Kristofferson served as an Army officer and helicopter pilot before pursuing music full-time. His songs would eventually be recorded by countless artists, including Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, and Willie Nelson.

Shaggy – United States Marine Corps

Grammy-winning artist Shaggy served in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed during Operation Desert Storm. He often credits his military experience with helping develop the discipline and determination needed for success in the music industry.
